Courses

For the 2010–11 academic year, course work will begin in mid-August 2010. A two-week sequence of seminars focuses on the new technologies of communication, changes in news media business models and the evolving social functions of the news media.

During the fall semester, students will take two courses at USC Annenberg: one in advanced reporting methods emphasizing quantitative skills, and a seminar on journalism in a specialized field such as religion, immigration or science. In addition, they will take two graduate-level elective courses from across the university appropriate to their field of specialization. Students will also begin research on their master’s professional project.

In the spring semester, students will enroll in a journalism course focused on the reporting and analysis of decision making and a directed research course, growing out of the fall seminar in specialized reporting. Students will enroll in two other elective courses from offerings across the university will complete their master’s professional project. Graduation is May, 2011. 

Each student will be guided in developing their course of study by a mentorship committee composed of two journalism faculty members and a member of the faculty from another academic unit who is a specialist in the student's chosen topic.

Note for students in arts journalism

Students studying arts journalism must take their elective courses from at least two arts schools, with at least eight units from one school.

The M.A. degree program in specialized journalism is designed to be completed on a full-time basis in nine months; however, students may elect to complete the program on a part-time basis.
