The Annenberg School for Communication at the University of Southern California and the London School of Economics & Political Science inaugurated this innovative dual M.A. degree program in Global Communication in 2001. The program is the first of its kind in the world to study the impact of globalization on communication, society, culture, politics and media practices in two of the world’s most important media capitals. The program takes two years to complete: students spend their first year in London at LSE and a second year at the USC Annenberg School in Los Angeles. In both universities they study with some of the world's foremost scholars and researchers as well as learn from distinguished leaders and experts drawn from the media and entertainment industries, international governmental organizations, NGOs, and policy-making bodies around the world. The courses focus on such diverse topics as globalization in entertainment, news flows, international business, media policy, the cultural production of media content and individual identities, and new communication and information technologies. Students are also able to take advantage of the personal networks that have been developed by a globally dispersed community of alumni and friends of two genuinely global universities.

Although this degree program is relatively new, it has already achieved significant success. Our students have come from the best universities in the world including Harvard, Oxford, the Sorbonne, Stanford, Columbia, Berkeley, Northwestern, the University of London, Cambridge, Yale, the University of Beijing, the University of Chicago, Cornell, Dartmouth, Athens, Wellesley, the University of Pennsylvania, Fudan, Vassar, Brown, UCLA, the LSE and USC, among many others. The global nature of the program is further enhanced by the fact that students have come from such nations as: Germany, Italy, Russia, China, India, Bangladesh, Taiwan, South Korea, Sweden, Kenya, Iran, Turkey, France, Norway, Greece, Luxembourg, Lebanon, Jordan, Thailand, Philippines, Canada, Great Britain and the United States. Students have also gone on to a wide range of careers and have accepted positions around the world in news organizations, global advertising organizations, NGOs, the entertainment industry, embassies, aerospace companies, think tanks and IGOs like the World Bank.

The courses in this program are uniquely challenging, the professors friendly and accessible, and the opportunities beyond the classroom extraordinary in both London and Los Angeles. I hope you give this program serious consideration. Please feel free to contact me if you have questions.

Sincerely,

Dr. Patricia Riley
