Serena Cha oversees the University of Southern California's groundbreaking television news and multimedia operation housed in the Annenberg School for Communication. For more than a decade, she has trained many journalists now working as producers, reporters, anchors and media leaders all over the country.
Cha supervises more than 200 students each semester as they put together USC's live nightly newscast for a worldwide web audience and campus television viewers. She also guides student news and sports journalists in covering breaking news for atvn.org and using the latest multimedia/networking tools to bring a wide range of Web-exclusive stories to the public. She is launching a new course to give students the opportunity to fully develop sports and news stories in multimedia form.
Before joining USC in the summer of '98 to start
Annenberg TV News (ATVN), Cha was an executive producer at KCAL-TV Los Angeles. She also worked as senior news producer at KCBS and as news producer at KNBC and KTTV in Los Angeles. She began her television career at WJZ-TV Baltimore, where she produced the country's top-rated 11 p.m. local newscast. She won the Associated Press Award for best television newscast in California and a Golden Mike Award for best daytime newscast in Los Angeles.
Cha earned her master's degree in journalism at Columbia University and received her undergraduate degree in history from the University of Michigan.
