Annenberg Networks Network (ANN) Seminar: Woody Powell, Stanford University
Annenberg Room 207, 12 noon
Join students and faculty for a presentation by Woody Powell, professor of education at Stanford University. His topic: “Organizational and institutional emergence: Why do high-tech clusters in the life sciences form in some regions but not others?” From Dr. Powell: “Most research on the emergence of high-tech clusters samples on successful cases. Our approach begins with the formation of a new field -- biotechnology in the late 1970s and early 1980s -- and follows the field to the present. We emphasize the sequence of network formation, organizational diversity and catalytic organizations. We examine eleven resource-rich regions in the U.S. that could have led to the formation of life science clusters. We specify the processes and mechanisms that foster catalytic growth.” This talk is a special presentation of the Annenberg Research Seminar series. Lunch will be served.
