Join students and faculty for a presentation by Karen Myers, assistant professor in the Department of Communication at the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her topic: "Vocational Anticipatory Socialization and Discursive Messages: Exploring Girls' Propensity to Study and Enter Careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics." From Professor Myers: "Women comprise only a small portion of the relatively low number of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) college graduates in the United States, so the low interest of girls and young women in these fields is of particular concern. By the time girls are in junior high many have received, interpreted and begun to respond to messages that dissuade them from interests related to STEM areas. I will discuss a new branch of my research program on organizational socialization, vocational anticipatory socialization of girls, and young women that influences their interest in, and probability of pursuing, studies and careers in STEM."
Lunch will be served.
